What Stalker is about and why it matters

Stalker (1979) — a 2h 43m-long film in two parts — follows three men: a guide, a writer, and a scientist, who cross a forbidden, slowly transforming landscape known as the Zone, in search of a hidden room believed to grant the deepest desire of those who enter it.

Their journey unfolds almost entirely on foot: through water, rust, grass, abandoned buildings, silence. The film contains no conventional suspense. What it offers instead is time - time to look, to listen, to drift, to hesitate and to ask a question: what is it that we want from life the most? Because they are all heading to the Zone — a place that grants that innermost wish.

Why watch it?

Because Stalker changed what cinema could be. Tarkovsky treated film not as storytelling but as sculpture in time: an art of duration, perception, and inner movement. The Zone becomes a living environment of thought and feeling — a landscape that does not illustrate ideas, but produces them in the viewer. Long before contemporary “slow cinema”,2 Stalker proposed another way of seeing: patient, inward, ethically charged, and profoundly attentive. It has left an undeniable mark on the cinema. Without Tarkovsky there would be no David Lynch, no Béla Tarr, no Apichatpong Weerasethakul, no Nuri Bilge Ceylan, and much of what we now call “slow cinema” would have no vocabulary for time, silence, or spiritual weight. But more than influence, what Stalker leaves behind is a different moral posture toward the image: a belief that cinema can be a place where consciousness is tested, where attention becomes an ethical act, and where the viewer is not entertained but transformed.

To watch Stalker is not to consume a film, but to enter a space and to discover how your own way of seeing behaves once you are inside it.

Part one ends with the Stalker arguing with the Professor and the Writer about their desire to walk the Zone as they please. There is a system to reaching the center, and without his guidance they won’t survive it: the territory behaves in ways that can be fatal to a first-time visitor. In the Zone, you have to be accepted.

Part two begins with the three men walking through what they call the “dry tunnel” — a local joke. The passage is normally flooded, but today they’re lucky: there’s less water, and they don’t have to swim.

In January, Parts II and III will follow this opening movement into the Zone — tracing Tarkovsky’s use of the Rückenfigur3, the film’s philosophy of time and perception, and the ethical transformation it asks of the viewer.

When people speak about Stalker, they almost always begin with its story. They talk about the forbidden Zone, the Room, the three men on a journey. They talk about symbols, allegory, Soviet history, philosophy, science fiction. But this is already a mistake. Because Stalker is not structured as a narrative in the usual sense. It is structured as a ritual. And rituals are not meant to be followed. They are meant to be entered.

Tarkovsky wanted his films to remain open, not in the sense of being vague or undecided, but open in the way a landscape is open: capable of holding many paths at once. In his interviews, he spoke explicitly about welcoming the controversy that surrounded his later films, and nothing, he said, would have disappointed him more than a single, closed, universally agreed-upon interpretation of his work. At the same time, he was deeply resistant to symbolic reduction. Again and again he rejected the idea that the images of his films could be “decoded” into stable meanings. The Zone, he insisted, does not symbolize anything, it is a zone. And yet this refusal of fixed symbolism was never a rejection of depth.

What Tarkovsky sought instead was a cinema that could sustain multiple possible readings without collapsing into allegory: a dreamlike logic in which the viewer is invited to link the film’s images to his or her own memories, longings, fears, and hopes. Our interpretation is meant to remain free-floating and open-ended. Each time I rewatch Stalker, I wonder if these deliberate ambiguities are Tarkovsky’s visual traps, set to capture the viewer’s curiosity and speculation.

It is within this space, between resistance to symbols and openness of meaning, that a religious reading of Stalker becomes not only possible, but inevitable. For if the film refuses to function as a system of signs, it nevertheless unfolds through a grammar that is unmistakably sacred: drawn from biblical forms, liturgical rhythms, canonical images, and the long visual memory of religious art. To explore this “sacred grammar” is not to impose meaning on the film, but to follow the way the film itself asks to be seen.

Tarkovsky’s distrust of Western modernity was not merely political; it was spiritual. He believed that contemporary Western culture had become overwhelmingly self-absorbed, oriented toward comfort, success, and material satisfaction, and almost incapable of taking seriously the idea that human life might exist for something beyond personal happiness. In such a world, the language of sacrifice, transcendence, or the immortality of the soul no longer sounded intelligible. What disturbed him most was not simply materialism itself, but the kind of rational, analytical mindset that accompanied it; a mindset that, in his view, steadily stripped creative experience of its mystery and reduced art to something explainable, functional, and ultimately disposable.

Against this, Tarkovsky consistently positioned what he called dukhovnost1 , a word that gestures toward the inner, spiritual life cultivated in Eastern Christian tradition. Again and again, he contrasted the pragmatic, instrumental thinking of the modern West with the spiritual temperament of the East, which he regarded as more attuned to endurance, humility, and inward transformation. His cultural critique sometimes carried an openly Slavic inflection, echoing the old fault line between Eastern and Western Christianity that had split Europe since the Great Schism.2 He saw this fracture not simply as a historical event, but as an ongoing psychic condition that shaped how civilizations understood the world, art, and the human soul.

In a public lecture in London in 1984, significantly titled The Apocalypse, Tarkovsky used modern religious painting in the Vatican as a case study in what he regarded as contemporary art’s deepest failure: the loss of spiritual gravity. Western art, he argued, had taken a “wrong turn” by submitting itself to the demands of rational explanation and technical analysis. This intellectualization, in his view, drained art of its power to touch what cannot be reduced to concepts - the invisible core of human experience.

For Tarkovsky, the true essence of cinema could never be reached through explanation alone. The “mystique” of his films, their spiritual charge, remained inaccessible to spectators who insisted on immediately asking why, what for, what does this mean? His films, he believed, required a fundamentally different posture from the viewer: not analysis, but surrender. Only a spectator willing to approach the image with emotional openness and without defensive interpretation could fully enter the world the film created. In this encounter, the artist does not argue or persuade; he reveals. And the viewer is left with a choice: to believe in what is being shown, or to reject it as irrelevant.

This conception of art places Tarkovsky within a long spiritual lineage rather than a modern intellectual one. He found deep affinity with Russian Symbolism,3 which treated art not as a system of signs but as a living force capable of renewing myth, restoring meaning, and effecting inner transformation. Art, in this tradition, does not clarify the world, it redeems it. Tarkovsky absorbed this outlook so thoroughly that it shaped even the way he later reflected on his own practice in Sculpting in Time.4 For him, the artist became a kind of creator whose images functioned as “hieroglyphs of absolute truth”, not in the sense of fixed symbols, but as inexhaustible forms that carry more reality than any scientific explanation could capture.

Ingmar Bergman once described Nostalghia and The Sacrifice as “films à la Tarkovsky.” What he recognised was a fundamental shift in cinema itself—creation of a new film language, one that no longer treated life as something to be explained or narrated, but as something to be apprehended as vision, as dream. This achievement, Bergman believed, secured Tarkovsky’s place in film history, and it is precisely this quality that continues to draw both audiences and filmmakers who seek forms of cinema that resist the shallowness of the global mainstream.

Bergman described his first encounter with Tarkovsky’s work as nothing short of miraculous. It felt, he said, like standing before the door of a room he had always longed to enter, a room whose key had never been available to him, and discovering that Tarkovsky was already inside, moving with complete freedom. The experience was both encouraging and unsettling. Here was someone articulating, with extraordinary precision, what Bergman himself had sensed for years but had never known how to express.
